Overcoming Resistance

Why Do We Hold Ourselves Back?

Resistance is a natural part of the creative and growth process. It’s that inner force that causes us to hesitate, doubt ourselves, and hold back from pursuing what we truly want. It can show up as procrastination, fear, or an overwhelming sense of self-doubt. We might think:

  • I’m not ready yet.

  • I don’t have enough time.

  • What if I fail?

These thoughts are valid, and they reflect our fear of the unknown or our desire for perfection. Resistance often arises because we fear the discomfort of change or because we feel that we’re not worthy of the success or the joy that comes with taking action.

But here’s the truth: resistance doesn’t mean that you’re doing something wrong. In fact, it’s often a sign that you’re on the verge of something new, something that will challenge you and help you grow. It’s a signal that you’re about to move beyond your comfort zone, which is where transformation happens.

Shift from "Push" to "Flow"

One of the biggest misconceptions about taking action is that it has to be forced. Many of us have been taught to push ourselves through tasks, to check off our to-do lists, to hustle and grind. But this constant pressure only leads to burnout and exhaustion. Heart-led action is about moving from a place of flow, not force.

When we move in alignment with our inner truth and desires, action doesn’t feel like an obligation—it feels like an extension of who we are. It flows naturally, with ease, and it feels good.

To shift from "push" to "flow," ask yourself:

  • What do I truly desire to create right now?

  • What would feel exciting and fulfilling, rather than draining?

  • How can I take one small step today that feels both nurturing and aligned with my heart’s calling?

Rather than forcing yourself to take huge leaps, honour where you are right now and take small, intuitive actions that align with your heart. This approach creates space for creativity, joy, and ease.

Overcoming Resistance with Compassion and Patience

When resistance arises, it’s important to meet it with compassion, not judgment. We often beat ourselves up when we feel stuck, thinking there’s something wrong with us for not moving forward. But self-compassion is a powerful tool for shifting from resistance to action.

Start by acknowledging your feelings. Instead of pushing against them, accept them. Recognize that resistance is a normal part of the process and doesn’t mean that you’re incapable or unworthy of success.

  • Ask yourself: What am I afraid of? What does this resistance represent?

  • Be gentle with yourself: It’s okay to feel uncertain or scared. I am doing my best, and I can move at my own pace.

Give yourself permission to take things one step at a time. It’s not about being perfect or moving quickly; it’s about honoring your process and taking aligned action as you go.

Heart-Led Action: Aligning with Your True Desires

So, how can we take aligned, heart-led action? The key lies in connecting with our inner wisdom and trusting that our desires are guiding us toward something meaningful and fulfilling. When we act from a place of alignment, the steps we take are not driven by external pressure or expectation—they’re inspired by a deep connection to what we truly want to create in our lives.

Here are some ways to tap into heart-led action:

  1. Start with Intention
Before you begin any task or project, take a moment to check in with your heart. What is my intention for this? Is it aligned with my core values? Does it excite me or inspire me? If it feels off, it might be time to pause and reassess before moving forward.

  2. Listen to Your Body
Our bodies are often the first to signal us when something isn’t aligned. If you feel tense, anxious, or drained by a task, it could be a sign that it’s not the right action for you at this moment. On the other hand, when you’re in alignment with your heart, your body will feel lighter and more energized.

  3. Take Small, Conscious Steps
Heart-led action doesn’t require grand gestures. In fact, small steps often lead to the most profound transformations. Whether it’s setting aside five minutes a day to journal, taking a walk in nature, or having a conversation with someone who inspires you, each small action you take is a reflection of your deeper desires.

  4. Release Perfectionism
Aligned action isn’t about doing things perfectly. It’s about doing them with intention and presence. Embrace the imperfections of your journey and trust that every step, no matter how small, is part of your growth.

Trust the Process: Embrace the Journey

One of the most powerful things we can do when faced with resistance is to trust that the path will unfold as it’s meant to. It’s easy to feel like we need to have everything figured out before we take action. But often, it’s only through taking those first small steps that the next steps will become clear.

The key is to stay present with your desires and trust the process. You don’t need to know exactly where you’re going; you just need to know that every step is leading you closer to what’s meant for you.

Aligned Action is Empowering

Taking aligned, heart-led action isn’t about forcing yourself to do more; it’s about listening to your inner wisdom and moving from a place of presence and intention. It’s about connecting with your desires, honoring your process, and moving forward in a way that feels authentic and empowering.

If you’re facing resistance, be gentle with yourself. Trust that it’s part of the journey, and know that each small step you take brings you closer to the life and creations that are waiting for you.
